Every year, thousands of businesses take the plunge and register to become new federal contractors, hoping to boost sales and develop reliable customer bases during uncertain economic times. Breaking into the federal market can be tricky however and requires a significant investment of time and resources. Luckily, by following a few simple steps, even inexperienced businesses can work their way to success in government contracting.

The very first thing businesses should do is evaluate their readiness for government contracting and the government's needs for their products or services. There are several resources that should be utilized in researching where your business fits in the federal market, including the Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS), FebBizOpps (FBO), USASpending.gov, and Dynamic Small Business Search (DSBS).

Next, you will need to complete the paperwork necessary to register as a federal contractor. Yes, this will include getting a DUNS number and submitting your System for Award Manangement, or SAM registration. However, there are also optional registrations you shouldn't neglect just because they're not required. If your business is a small business according to the SBA, it would be wise to complete your DSBS profile. If you qualify for set asides or want to do business with particular agencies, you will likely need to complete additional registrations for these as well.

The last step to ensure success is to build your marketing strategy. The most effective way to market to government buyers is a two part approach: research upcoming projects and network with purchasing officers. Many vendors skip this step, expecting that all they need to do is register and contracts will come rolling in. Unfortunately, vendors who make this assumption rarely win contracts and waste valuable time, money and resources while they wait.
